To maintain an internet-based information system on free neonatal intensive care beds.

To collect data of very preterm infants, very low birth weight (VLBW) infants and other high-risk newborn infants to:

• identify trends and variations in mortality or morbidity
• provide the individual NICUs/NUs with statistical information about their unit in comparison with the complete database in order to assist with quality management
• compare local trends with other countries
• monitor the effect of guidelines.

To coordinate follow-up (standardized tests at predefined ages, questionnaires to parents, pediatricians, teachers, etc.).

To secure long term recurrent funding.

To attract talented research students and fellows to promote the research endeavors of the Swiss Neonatal Network.
