start4neo - Swiss Neonatal Resuscitation Training

Information about the course program

Initiated by the Swiss Society of Neonatology, start4neo is a national learning and teaching program relevant for all professionals involved in the care of newborns in the delivery room.

During a pilot phase in 2012, the Basic Skills Course was assessed in hospitals in 5 regions of Switzerland. Starting in 2013, the course is now being offered nationwide.

The following Swiss medical societies acknowledge the Basic Skills Course:

  • Swiss Society of Neonatology: 4 credits
  • Swiss Society of Pediatrics: 4 credits
  • Swiss Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology: 4 credits
  • Swiss Society of Anesthesia and Resuscitation: 4 credits

Currently the Swiss Society of Neonatology is working on developing an Advanced Skills Course.

Aims of the Basic Skills Course

The aims of the Basic Skills Course are to enhance basic knowledge and to improve skills in the neonatal resuscitation. It is a hands-on course using lifelike manikins and original resuscitation equipment to practice skills.

Having successfully completed the course, the participants will be able to anticipate risk factors for impaired adaption and to adequately prepare for possible neonatal resuscitation. They will be able to take the first steps to stabilize the newborn, to start cardiopulmonary resuscitation when needed and to assess the situation correctly in order to request additional support if necessary.

Structure of the course

The course consists of four modules. The modules can be offered individually or as a whole package, depending on requirements. The modules of the Basic Skills Course are:

  1. Preparing and clearing the airways
  2. Ventilation
  3. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation
  4. Algorithms

Prior to the course, the participants will receive a script and 20 multiple choice questions to review the theory and prepare for the course at home. During the course, there is ample opportunity to discuss questions with the instructors.
